Youth Café proposal for Monaghan Town Supported by Outgoing Councillors

Proposals to establish a ‘Youth Café’ in Monaghan town were fully supported by the members of Monaghan Town
Council at their May monthly meeting.  The case for the facility was outlined by a Comhairle na nÒg group of
students representing some of the secondary schools in the area.

It is envisaged that a Youth Café for Monaghan would be similar to the one which has been established in
Castleblayney, offering young people a safe and supervised recreational environment in which to meet up, have a cup
of tea or coffee, play games like pool or “playstation” and watch widescreen TV or access the internet.  The café
would be open on certain nights of the week and for longer periods of the day at the weekends.  Information on topics
like drug awareness, sex education and career options would also be available.

The young people present also made it clear that they were fully aware of problems like underage drinking, and were
keen to help out with any moves to eliminate such activities in and around the town. The councillors were unanimous
in commending the young people for taking this initiative.  It was agreed that the matter would have to be dealt with
by the incoming council following the upcoming local elections.
